DAS and partners seeking to raise £25,000 for charity with Deloitte Ride Across Britain

22nd March 2021

DAS UK Group, the UK’s leading specialist legal expenses insurer, will be taking part in this year’s Deloitte Ride Across Britain in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society and Insurance United Against Dementia (IUAD).

A ten person DAS UK team, consisting of five employees and five business partners, is aiming to raise more than £25,000 by cycling 980 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats over nine gruelling days from 4-12 September.

Ride highlights include:

  • St Michael’s Mount
  • Ride through Cheddar Gorge
  • Crossing the Severn Bridge
  • Chepstow Castle
  • Climbing Shap Fell
  • Stunning Lake District views
  • The Grampian Mountains
  • Cairngorms National Park
  • Conquering Glenshee and the Lecht Ski Hill
  • John O’Groats and views of the Orkneys

Each of the hardy participants will ride for nine hours a day, covering more than 100 miles per day. In doing so, the team will also climb a total of over 52,000 feet – the equivalent of riding up Mount Everest twice in nine days (while also camping out overnight!).

We have put together a great team of athletes, many of whose lives have been touched by dementia, and have started training and fundraising in earnest.

A range of supporting fundraising events are also being planned, including a ‘Virtual RAB Challenge’ while the actual event is taking place. Launched in June, this virtual event will give teams from the rest of the insurance industry the opportunity to run, ride, walk, row (or any other means of exercise) similar distances in order to raise funds for IUAD.

Why we’re supporting the Alzheimer’s Society

Led by sixteen dedicated board members and a range of industry wide supporters, including DAS UK, IUAD is galvanising the industry to take action and raise significant funds to transform dementia treatment and care. Since the campaign launched in September 2017, the industry has raised an incredible £5.5 million to fund vital dementia research.

There are currently 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK. With no cure and limited treatments, one in three people will develop the condition in their lifetime. This disease has a devastating personal impact, but also far-reaching consequences for society as a whole – it currently costs the UK economy over £34 billion every single year.

David Swigciski, Director – Client Services, DAS UK Group said: “The Deloitte Ride Across Britain is undoubtedly one of the most gruelling challenges a cyclist can face. We have put together a great team of athletes, many of whose lives have been touched by dementia, and have started training and fundraising in earnest. We look forward to introducing the team over social media over the next few weeks.

“As a company, we have a strong history of helping charities and our local communities so all our staff will have an important role to play in raising funds for this undoubtedly worthy cause.”

Thanks to the support and fundraising from DAS Legal, Alzheimer’s Society can continue to raise awareness of the devastating impact of dementia and fund vital services.

Charlotte Matier, Alzheimer’s Society

Charlotte Matier, Director of Development, Alzheimer’s Society said: “We’re really proud of the ten riders taking on such a gruelling challenge in aid of Alzheimer’s Society and the Insurance United Against Dementia campaign.

“Thanks to the support and fundraising from DAS Legal, Alzheimer’s Society can continue to raise awareness of the devastating impact of dementia and fund vital services like the ‘Dementia Connect’ support line to be there for more people with dementia and their families and carers, particularly after the devastating impact of lockdown and coronavirus.”

Coronavirus is having a devastating impact on the lives of the 850,000 people currently living with dementia in the UK, many of whom have been cut off from their carers and support networks at a time when they most desperately need their support.

Chris Wallace, IUAD

Chris Wallace, Executive Director, QBE and Chair of the Insurance United Against Dementia (IUAD) board, said: “It is fantastic to see DAS UK take on the Deloitte Ride Across Britain in support of Alzheimer’s Society and IUAD.

“As some of the most vulnerable members in society, coronavirus is having a devastating impact on the lives of the 850,000 people currently living with dementia in the UK, many of whom have been cut off from their carers and support networks at a time when they most desperately need their support.

“Thanks to the riders at DAS UK, Alzheimer’s Society and IUAD will be able continue to support people with dementia, their family and carers when they need it the most.”
