I’m riding in support of the fight against dementia. Having recently experienced a close family friend pass away after a long period suffering from dementia, I am mindful of how important it is to support this cause.

It is such a cruel disease – the debilitating effect that it has, not only upon the individual suffering with the disease, but also upon their loved ones. It was just heartbreaking to witness my friend become increasingly distant to the point where he eventually could not even recognise his family and friends.

I am relatively new to long distance cycling. I first took an interest in it after being advised to stop long distance running by my consultant after undergoing knee cartilage surgery. My experience of long distance cycling, to date, has been limited to a few 100 mile sportives.

However, prior to lockdown, I used to commute the 16 mile trip from home in Chepstow to the office. I am hoping that the cycling I have done over the past few years will provide a solid foundation, but I will need to put the miles in over the next few months if I am going to get to John O’Groats!

My target for this ride is simply to get from Land’s End to John O’Groats. I am conscious that it’s an awful long way and there are going to be a lot of hilly climbs to get over. Hopefully I can finish each day without having to put my bicycle lights on!
